Sustainability at Nomura Babcock & Brown

Driving a Sustainable and Prosperous Future

We are committed to helping build a sustainable and prosperous society through international lease transactions, primarily for aircraft. The Nomura Group's purpose is: "We aspire to create a better world by harnessing the power of financial markets". We envision a society that preserves the environment, innovates through technology, values diverse talent, and fosters well-being. We accordingly set three material priorities and focus on eight of the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key Priorities

  • The aviation industry faces strong societal pressure to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. We leverage our international leasing expertise to help shrink the industry's environmental footprint by introducing advanced low-emissions equipment.
  • We help airlines adopt SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and support renewable energy initiatives.
7. AFFORDABLE AND CLEANENEGY
12. RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION
13. CLIMATE ACTION

2. Drive Innovation through Digitization

  • We help customers navigate the challenges of a fast-changing social and economic landscape by digitizing processes to add value. We draw on a range of systems and tools to help resolve social issues, innovate, and strengthen partnerships across departments and corporations.
  • Digital technologies transform and streamline business processes and operations.
9. INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE

3. Cultivate Talent and a Supportive Work Environments

  • People are central to social sustainability and prosperity. We develop talent by helping employees reach their potential and building positive workplaces that embrace diversity.
  • We support employee growth through wide-ranging educational and training opportunities.
  • We promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, fostering a corporate culture that respects different perspectives and values.
  • We create healthy work environments by encouraging flexible working styles, helping our people balance professional and personal commitments, and implementing health management initiatives.

IBERIA EETC

In 2022, we managed an EETC (Enhanced Equipment Trust Certificate) operating lease transaction for two A350s and three A320neos for Iberia Airlines. A significant feature of this project was the inclusion of an ESG clause stipulating that this carrier would incur certain penalties if it failed to meet targeted emission standards. We helped the airline reduce environmental impact by investing in fuel-efficient, modern aircraft while helping build a sustainable economy by selling an ESG-related instrument.
This project garnered international acclaim for being the first of its type for a private placement and for launching on schedule despite disruption from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It received the Best Capital Markets Deal 2022 award from aviation information vendor Ishka, crediting us as the equity provider.

2. Drive Innovation through Digitization

We are collaborating with Group company Nomura Kagayaki Co., Ltd., to streamline business processes by digitizing contract documents and other paper-based materials. We are harnessing the space freed up to establish internal meeting areas, streamlining operations and enhancing productivity.

We emphasize physical and mental well-being, occupational safety and health, and comfortable work environments. Each year, we analyze health risks to identify challenges, plan and execute initiatives, and verify results.
